The Paranormal Activities around St. Atanas Church in Varos-Prilep

The wealth of traditions and various folk tales in Varos

and Prilep is related to the spiritual and cultural past

of this area.

Traces of cultural wealth are found both on material

as well as on spiritual terms.

Traditions are part of spiritual wealth that is directly

related to material events and content.

Some of the traditions have even prophetic or prophetic character.

One of those, which is especially packed with mysticism,

is the tradition of the church Atanas in Varos

It is still a healthy structure without a roof only a hundred meters below the monastery

of St. Archangel Michael. The temple is a very attractive building built

of well-processed calcareous stone and baked bricks.

According to archaeologists, it dates from the 14th century as well as

the most healthy and ruined churches of Varos.

It is distinguished by the absence of a roof and the tradition bound to the roof

The folk tale speaks of an unknown curse tied to St. Atanas Church. According to him,

the masters of the church tried several times to cover the roof of the church,

but despite their great efforts, they could not build it, because some unknown force.

It collapsed in a mysterious manner .

So everything they did during the day was mysteriously ruined in the night.

It is difficult to determine for what reasons this beautiful building still has

no roof today, and whether the curse of the tradition is real power. But the strong

fact is that the building is without a roof.

What is the mystery of the tradition? Perhaps it is entirely of a spiritual nature

that relates to haphazard relationships in certain spheres of the human spirit that,

for its part, does not allow the organization of appropriate action to lay a roof on

an important and beautiful object such as this impressive temple.

It differs from other church buildings in Varos. Among them, the apse that does

not have a semicircular shape here, but an angle.

It is less common in the construction of God's homes. The very structure occupies

almost square shape, and in its walls are built more old elements of buildings,

mainly marble monuments from older times, which eventually existed in the same

space or in its vicinity.

Such elements of antiquity were also noted by archaeologists and researchers who

 were interested in cultural remains.

Archaeologist Saria from Belgrade, who arrived in Prilep in 1923, stated that

the church had a significant number of ancient monuments embeddedin the building

 itself.

According to him, four large marble pillars were built in the church, and only

two of them stood vertically in his time.

The columns actually held the former roof. Did he ever exist?

Has the roof fallen aftera long time standing on the building or it is about

unsuccessful workmanship since the beginning.

The fact that the building dates back to the time of the great number of

churches also entered into the old tradition can mean that the church was even active

at some of the better times.

It is not excluded that it was one of the churches of special families in Varos, also

described in a separate tradition.

A lot of archaeological remains were found around it, among them are specifically

mentioned the smelting furnaces, furnaces for baking pottery and the like.

Nearby graves from the Middle Ages were excavated and coins from the Macedonian kings

were found.

This, in turn, confirms the long continuity of using this space over different periods.

How long will the curse of St. Atanas' church be surrounded by so much wealth from an

ancient culture of tens of centuries?

The question, it seems, is not difficult, but the answer ...

 77 churches

Once Varos had 77 churches. From them, St. Dimitrija, Sv. Nikola, St. Peter,

St. Virgin Prechista, St. Atanas, which is without a roof. Here are the monasteries

St. Arahangel Michael and the monastery St. Virgin Prehistoric.

The church and the dormitories of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God

 - Treskavec, from the 13th century, rests in the clutches of the heapstone stones

 of Zlatovrv.
